This paper introduces a new representation for planar objects which is invariant to projective transformation. Proposed representation relies on a new shape basis which we refer to as the conic basis. The conic basis takes conic-section coefficients as its dimensions and represents the object as a convex combination of conic-sections. Pairs of conic-sections in this new basis and their projective invariants provides the proposed view invariant representation. We hypothesize that two projectively transformed versions of an object result in the same representation. We show that our hypothesis provides promising recognition performance when we use the nearest neighbor rule to match projectively deformed objects. 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Shape equivalence under perspective and projective transformations.

When a planar shape is viewed obliquely, it is deformed by a perspective deformation. If the visual system were to pick up geometrical invariants from such projections, these would necessarily be invariant under the wider class of projective transformations. To what extent can the visual system tell the difference between perspective and nonperspective but still projective deformations of shape...

A New Method of Image Mosaicking and Its Application to Cultural Heritage Representation

This paper presents an original two-step procedure for estimating projective transformations between pairs of images: first, the transformation between the images is approximated as an affine transformation; second, this estimate is refined into that of a projective transformation. This strategy for matching projective views is computationally very efficient. The proposed method can be applied ...

A Technique for Matching Projective Views with Application to Color Image Mosaicking

This paper presents an original coarse-to-fine technique for creating mosaics of color images related by projective transformations. The actual projective transformation is first approximated with an afine transformation whose parameters are estimated by means of an algorithm operating in the frequency domain. The projective transformation is then computed with an algorithm based on feature mat...

Planar Structure Matching under Projective Uncertainty for Geolocation

Image based geolocation aims to answer the question: where was this ground photograph taken? We present an approach to geolocalating a single image based on matching human delineated line segments in the ground image to automatically detected line segments in ortho images. Our approach is based on distance transform matching. By observing that the uncertainty of line segments is non-linearly am...

Single-View Matching Constraints

A single-view matching constraint is described which represents a necessary condition which 6 points in an image must satisfy if they are the images of 6 known 3D points under an arbitrary projective transformation. Similar to the well-known matching constrains for two or more view, represented by fundamental matrices or trifocal tensors, single-view matching constrains are represented by tenso...
